Kitchen Redesign

So here we are, late on Sunday, redesigning the kitchen.

As I've mentioned before, the dimensions of the kitchen have changed - seemingly due to the builder having to correct the architect's drawings. This means that the original kitchen layout is no longer feasible.

To that end, this afternoon was spent on hands and knees drawing chalk lines on our new concrete floor. This was to test out some ideas in the actual space, as opposed to just seeing things on paper or on a computer screen.

During all the new measurements I did for this, I discovered that the door is off-centre by 3cm and that it's the width of the windows that is the difference. I hadn't noticed until measuring so hopefully I'll keep not noticing it.

Anyway, once a layout was sketched out I went inside to put this on the computer. We were recommended a company to use whose website has an amazing 3D kitchen planner. Not only does it allow placement of units but also automatically adds fillers, spacers, end panels, cornices etc. Price seemed reasonable too. Good chance we'll be buying from these guys.

So this is what the revised layout looks like:

You'll notice a few changes. The u-shape of the kitchen has been rotated. This has been made possible by the blocking off of the utility room door. The lack of access to the utility room means that a sink and dishwasher are now needed in the kitchen. Dishwasher will be a slimline one; we used one on holiday once and the size was just right for daily use. Sink will be a small perfunctory one in the left corner.

You may also note that the dining table has changed. After seeing some of the tables in real life today, Tracy has decided that a smaller table will be sufficient. I say smaller, but it will still comfortably seat 8! This arrangement will be movable but there is then space to fully open up the hole between the kitchen and the living room.

Yes, in another surprise move, Tracy didn't like windows and door dividing the rooms. So the lot is to come out and replaced by some sort of folding door. That will allow privacy / keep cooking smells confined / open up the whole space - as befits the situation at the time.

We've already approached someone on Etsy to make our table and benches. I'm getting a feel for the aesthetic Tracy is aiming for; I'm calling it the Wonky Wood style.

This is turning out to be quite a long post so I'll wind things up after this one last tangent. While I was outside I got some pictures of things I missed from the previous day.

Next week is going to see a lot of activity hopefully. Doors, windows, electrics, plumbing and plastering all due to happen! Exciting times!
