Today the builder (without prompting) addressed my concern about a big grey wall looming over our neighbour. The visible* part of the wall is being done in normal brick.
*I say just the visible zone is all normal brick but some of the grey is still visible. If the fence moves, or next door randomly decided that they wanted less floor space and demolished their extension, then a lot more grey blocks would be visible. So the situation is better but doesn't fulfill my usual standard for contingency planning.
In other news, the drain is finally receiving some attention. It's now been somewhat excavated and it is now clear why I couldn't find the pipe from the drain hole - it was on the side under the slabs so the test pit that I dug was on the wrong side; I never stood a chance!
It's a bit leaky so I'm looking forward to the soil drying out for, probably, the first time in years. Then I'll finally be able to tell if all the moistness on this side of the house is just from this drain or whether next door has a blockage.
The trouble with next door's drain getting blocked is that the water then pools up underneath their decking but because their garden is higher, it ends up leaking through the boundary wall. That happened once but I'm not convinced that it's happening again now. But, either way, fixing ours will prove it one way or the other.
So that's it for today. I kept out of their way, didn't ask loads of questions. Not sure if they appreciated that or not.
