I had yesterday off (drove up to Doncaster for the day). So there was only today's work. First job was to get that 5 metre roll of carpet into the loft. We purchased some rope and proceeded with a slightly different plan.
This revised plan involved taking the carpet to the back of the house, using the ladder to slide it on top of the extension then dragging it up and through the loft window.
The first half of that plan went well. The second half was a bit of a struggle as the carpet roll just crumpled up and got stuck on the window ledge.
So Dad bravely mounted the kitchen roof to get underneath the roll and straighten it out. Thankfully that did the trick and the carpet finally ended up where it needed to be.
I think it only took half an hour, which wasn't bad going. Here's some pictures (mostly screenshots of a video if we're being accurate) of the action:

Tying up the carpet, ready for moving |

First half complete. |

This is the angle I needed to be at but it would have been so easy to fall headfirst out of the window. So I promptly returned to floor level! |

Victory! |
The second job on the to-do list was to refit the carpet in the box-room / firstborn's former bedroom.
This was one of the builder's favourite hideyholes so it took some cleaning out. Once clean, I could make a start on restoring the carpet grippers. I only spiked myself once - how cool is that!
Then the underlay went back down. Not in the same order but look how very nearly perfect this one piece covers the whole room...
The underlay was cut to size (and shape) and stapled into place. Yes, using the 40 year old staple gun and no, I didn't break it.
Carpet was put back into position though, obviously, it needed a lot of cutting. This I did with a knife and, much to my surprise, I didn't make a mess of that either.
The offspring were very excited. They came into the room, farted and then left again. Is this a sign I should be doing more parenting and less DIY?
Anyway, stretched the carpet in to place and it looked good. Then my desk was moved into the room ready for tomorrow. Though I may have some explaining to do about the unicorn wallpaper and curtains...
Then we put the door next to the frame to see how much needed to be planed off the bottom of it. But, in a very rare event for this house, it fits just fine as it is. No fuss, just back on it's hinges and works. This never happens. It was very disconcerting.
The third job on the to-do list was the small loft bedroom. Only managed to get the carpet grippers fitted in there before it was time to get the offspring in bed. So that's where today's efforts ended.
A very successful day was had. Thanks to Dad for his help with the carpet and Mom for the videography during the maneuvers. I'm ignoring the new damp patch on the wall - it can't bring me down!
