Build Day 31

Guy knocks on door. I open door. Guy says "scaffold". I say "morning". What is it with these people?! In fairness they were okay after that very shaky opening gambit. Nowhere near as bad as Mr Chatty.

Anyway, the key takeaway from that is the scaffolding arrived and was assembled. When I looked at quotes for scaffolding last year, it seemed expensive. But after seeing three guys work hard for 3 hours assembling it all, I can start to see the justification. START to see, I'm still not convinced.

While that was being done, the builders cleared out the old interface between the living room and the new kitchen.

Discovered a couple of things. Firstly, the windows used to open:

And secondly, the exterior walls of the house are not cavity walls like I thought they were. That's going to make insulating them a tad trickier:

Once the builders had gone, and once I'd finished work, I decided I had to go and climb up the scaffolding and look at the state of the roof. The ladder was wobblier than I was happy with which made my heart skip a beat more than once. Plus the planks at the top weren't actually fixed in place so I was being very careful where I stepped. Probably needless caution but I'd rather it be like that than me suddenly falling through a trapdoor.

Roof, as expected, was in a very poor state. The guttering was full of broken roof tile. The builder reckons these are the original 1950's roof tiles. So they've seen some action!

So it's been a day with lots to report, even if not much tangible change has occurred. Tomorrow will probably be less dramatic.

Not the weather for roof work though. Lovely sunny weather until today where it's pissed it down all morning. Hopefully there'll be a break in the weather to get stuff done.
