Worktops Arrive

As the title says, the worktops were delivered today. They don't look as scarily unwieldy as the rolls of carpet did. Might actually be able to manage to move these without the need of ropes, ladders and pulley systems.

I had promised a little bit of info about design of the worktops:

We already knew where we wanted the sink and hob to go but to save effort, we paid for the supplier to cut the holes out. We also would need to join bits together so we had the supplier cut some mitre joints for us too.

So this is what the design looks like:

As you may imagine, some careful measuring was required. You can't move the cuts once they're done!

The measuring process was complicated by the non-square corner (the left corner in the above plan) and having to account for the extra material needed to form the male part of the mitre joint. Furthermore, the online system only measured from the left side, when I really wanted to measure from the square corner (right side above).

So, just to reinforce how crazy this was - I had to calculate where the hob would be centrally above the dishwasher after some of the back edge of part B1 was trimmed off (at an angle) and allow for the extra bit of A1 that would be inserted into B1!!! Yeah, if this works I'll be impressed!

I mention A1 and B1 above and you may have spotted a B2 as well. The A and B refer to lengths of worktop. They only come in 3m or 4m lengths. So I had to work out the most cost effective way to create three lengths of worktop. This ended up being two 3m lengths. The first length, A, was just trimmed to size but the second length, B, was used to create the two other lengths.

There was a structural integrity issue with the sink section, B1. I couldn't get the sink any closer to the mitre joint. So there may be a little bit of interference with the back of the cupboard, but it's as good as it's going to get, unfortunately.

So that's it. Just got to fit it all together, size it to the wonky wall and it should be done. Yeah, I'll have to cut a hole in the cupboard for the sink, and may need some ventilation holes for the hob but they shouldn't be too bad (famous last words!).
