Kitchen Assemblage Day 2

First task of the day was to find the centre point of the room and to draw a nice long straight line to work from. Soon encountered the first problem - I have no long straight edge to draw along! So I had to improvise. I dismantled a shelving unit and used the side as a ruler!

With a nice straight line, I then put some tiles down to see what would happen at the edges. As you can see, the tiles at the door fit beautifully but over at the right side wall there was a very narrow strip which isn't allowed.

So the whole thing had to move a quarter of a tile to the left. This also means I use more tiles. Probably more than I have as I have no allowance for breakages anymore. I do so love living on the edge.

Now that the layout was sorted, it was time to gather up the tiles, have a gentle sweep, mix up some tile adhesive and get spreading.

Took some effort to spread the adhesive but I eventually got into a rhythm, doing roughly 4 tiles at a time.

You can tell I meant business - I had the overalls on! Anyway, I carried on for about 4 hours and laid 26 tiles. I bet that's a snail pace compared to a professional but it's only my first go! I'm mostly happy with it, there's just a fraction of unevenness on the first few tiles (as I got used to the process) but there's nothing I can do about that now.

Tracy must really like these tiles - I had a cup of tea and some biscuits waiting for me after I'd finished tidying up!

Hoping to get the rest down tomorrow. Well, all down except for the edge tiles, which all need careful cutting. If I get an early start, it should be doable. I was really speeding up toward the end.
